I can only assume that you’ve clicked on this article because you want to become a writer. Congratulations! You are one of the hundreds of thousands of millions of people who think to themselves, “Maybe I should write a book someday.”
It’s important to know moving forward that what separates someone from wanting to become a writer and being a writer is not having a book published or being on the New York Times Best Seller List (although, that would be nice). What makes someone a writer is simply this: They write.
Don’t misunderstand me, you can’t slop a few sentences on a piece of paper twice a year and call yourself a writer. Being a writer means that you write constantly. Even when you’re not writing, you have one foot inside your story’s world at all times. You’re always open to bursts of inspiration even if that means calling your best friend over the car phone while driving and making them write down your ideas. When they question why, “because I can’t write it down myself right now, Bozo—I’m driving!”
It seems simple, right?
Except it’s not. Writing is hard.
How do I know it’s hard? Well, I want you to ask yourself how many people you know who have said that they want to write a book. Got your answer? Now, ask yourself how many of those people have completed writing or even started writing said book? I’m willing to bet that few to none of the people who claim to want to be writers have actually written anything.
That is because writing is hard. Sitting down and writing a manuscript requires a lot of commitment and time. It’s a hobby that can’t be accomplished in an afternoon, or in a week or even in a month. It’s a constant project that often times has little to no pay off.
Now that you know the realities of being a writer, you might be wondering why you should even want to be a writer in the first place. Writing might be hard, but knowing why you want to write should be easy.
Be a writer because you can’t imagine life without it. Be a writer because the worlds you build and the characters you breathe life into seem just as real to you as anything else in this world. Be a writer because storytelling is as innately human as eating or sleeping. Don’t be a writer because you want fame, or money, or success because it’s unlikely that you’ll find any of those things. What you will find, however, is personal fulfillment and maybe a little adventure along the way.
