Writing a Successful Book Query
Create a Template
Keep your query short and to the point. Set a goal of 300 to 500 words. Do not use bold type, underlines, or italics. Capitals can be utilized for emphasis.
Email Subject Line: Here you want to highlight the main point and be specific. Remember this is what you are depending on to get the editor to read your query.
Dear___________: Add the Editor or Agent’s name here (make sure the spelling is correct).
Would you be interested in my __________________ (state if it is fiction/nonfiction and list the title) which is about (describe the subject area or plot using twenty words or less – we call this your elevator pitch or 5 second pitch)
It features (Describe the highlights of the book in one to two short paragraphs – roughly four-eight sentences – remember they have limited time).
I believe [add Title] is marketable in that (provide one or more reasons, for example: It is the first book to cover this topic from this perspective, or describe how you will be supporting the book through personal promotional efforts).
My qualifications (list your education, background, experience, organizations or any other information to show you were qualified to write and will be able to promote the book).
I would be happy to submit a (overview/sample/completed manuscript) or other materials for further consideration. I can also submit (insert any information which might help promote the book – endorsements, affiliate groups, news or reviews about you or the material).
